Experience the Roman past in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion with VIA VIA

“What follows is always connected to what came before.”

Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Roman road brought people together across the Meuse-Rhine Euregion — Romans, Germanic tribes, and Gaulish communities. From 2027, it will do so again through VIA VIA, an immersive cross-border route connecting Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.

Developed by 13 partners, VIA VIA weaves existing Roman trails into one seamless journey for hikers and cyclists, featuring nine immersive hotspots. From themed routes and 3D characters to interactive exhibitions and audio fragments, these hotspots bring the Roman past of the Meuse-Rhine region vividly to life.

Guided by the Roman merchant family of Quintus Iulius Viator, brought to life through AI, visitors can follow their travels across the nine hotspots, exploring cities, landscapes, and landmarks as the family experienced them themselves.

Shape your own Roman journey — walk, cycle, and immerse yourself in history.

The Science Behind VIA VIA

Scientific research forms the foundation of VIA VIA and ensures that our cross-border route is both engaging and historically accurate. By connecting the richness of our hotspots with the latest knowledge about the region’s Roman past, visitors gain clear and reliable insights while fully immersing themselves in history. Our academic partners — the University of Liège and the research project Constructing the Limes (Utrecht University) — support us in this effort.

In 2027, they will expand the VIA VIA experience with a scientific map and a report containing detailed information about Roman discoveries and their context in the Rhine–Meuse region. In doing so, they will highlight the historical significance of the locations along the VIA VIA route and help visitors better understand the rich Roman heritage of this border region.
