A donkey taking you on a journey back to Roman times? In Bocholtz, that’s exactly what you can experience! Meet Marielle Colen from Hof Kricheleberg, one of our Via Belgica entrepreneurs. At her centuries-old half-timbered farmhouse, her love of animals, history and the South Limburg landscape comes together. The result? A truly special experience: a Roman-themed walk with donkeys! After all, why rush when there is so much to discover along the way?
Every Saturday morning, Marielle sets off into the rolling countryside with a small group and her four-legged companions. Along the way, you’ll discover where Roman villas once stood, pass the site of the burial of the Man of Bocholtz and hear stories about how the Romans lived here almost 2,000 years ago. What did they eat? What did their farms look like? And why did they choose to settle here? Marielle will tell you all about it. And the donkeys? They set the pace! As Marielle herself says: "You experience the landscape in a completely different way when you explore it at a donkey’s pace."
After a four-kilometre walk, a well-deserved cup of coffee or tea and a delicious slice of cake await you back at Hof Kricheleberg. RESEARCH – Via Belgica discovered in Maastricht
It is not the first discovery of its kind in Maastricht, but it is the most recent: the Via Belgica has been uncovered beneath the Meerssenerweg. The ancient road surface, together with adjoining drainage ditches, lies approximately two metres below ground level, running parallel to the modern road, which follows almost exactly the same route.
And the Via Belgica was not the only discovery brought to light during excavation work for a new sewer system. A thick layer of river silt, deposited during a flood of the River Meuse, covers the Via Belgica. Above it lie roads dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Right at the top: the modern asphalt of today’s road.

EXPO – Roman Bocholtz at Hoeve Overhuizen
After years of preparation, the Roman Information Centre has opened at Hoeve Overhuizen in Bocholtz. The centre showcases archaeological finds from the area’s rich Roman past and serves as the gateway to the cross-border Roman Landscape Park Bocholtz-Vetschau, which is set to open in 2027.

ENTREPRENEUR - Roman Herb Walk at the Botanical Garden in Kerkrade
During Open Monument Weekend, Kerkrade alderman Raoul Vinken and board member Hein Driessen officially opened the Roman herb and plant walk in Kerkrade’s beautiful Botanical Garden. The route was developed by curator Hanneke Schreiber and designer Judith Eurlings.
After a delightful walk through the garden, visitors were treated to herbal wine, Roman-inspired snacks and globi.

ENTREPRENEURS | Love hidden inside a chocolate jug 🍫❤️
Can you taste a love story that began almost 2,000 years ago? Ronald Stoot and Eric van Veggel of the Delicious Store prove that you can. Inspired by the famous Jug of Love of Lucius, they created a unique chocolate praline. During archaeological excavations in Heerlen, a Roman jug was discovered, made by the potter Lucius for his beloved Amaka. Inscribed with a heartfelt message, this remarkable find inspired a regional delicacy with a true Heerlen identity.
The Jug of Love of Lucius is available in dark, milk or white Belgian Callebaut chocolate, filled with a smooth hazelnut praline. Its shape reflects the original Roman jug, while the heart embossed on the chocolate symbolises the love between Lucius and Amaka. Every bite combines exceptional Belgian chocolate with a piece of Heerlen's Roman past.
With this special creation, Ronald and Eric hope to celebrate Heerlen's rich heritage while giving the city its own iconic regional delicacy. Curious to taste the Jug of Love of Lucius?
