Delicious Store
Ronald Stoot en Eric van Veggel

A long-cherished dream! Ronald Stoot, born and raised in Heerlen, opened a beautiful delicatessen shop on the Saroleastraat in Heerlen together with his partner Eric van Veggel. They named their shop Delicious Store.

In their shop, you wander from one Heerlense story to the next. During their walks through the beautiful South Limburg countryside, the best ideas begin to flow. “How can we spoil our customers with honest and delicious regional products? Preferably inspired by the history of the city of Heerlen.” Romans, the Middle Ages, or the mining past, topped off with Heerlen as a city of graffiti — you can find all these themes reflected in one of their products.

A passion for honest and healthy food — that is the foundation. We want people to taste natural and artisanal products, and preferably with a story behind them.

— Ronald Stoot

Where do they get their inspiration?

They look for inspiration in Maastricht and ’s-Hertogenbosch, where regional products have long been developed and creatively brought to market.

Ronald and Eric have already created several products inspired by the Roman past. They started with Caumerdal cheese, followed by Limburgica cheese, delicious charcuterie and pâté. Even the board on which you serve all these delicacies is engraved — they named it the secures board.

We highly recommend visiting their shop. You won’t be disappointed! Their passion and love for their craft are unmistakable. They truly brighten your day — after which you can enjoy all the delights you have placed in your shopping basket. Bon appétit!
A tip from Ronald: “We encourage every entrepreneur to work creatively with the history of their city. It gives you the opportunity to engage in conversation with your customers. And collaboration? We can only recommend it. By working together with the city, associations or organisations, you increase your visibility and expand your customer base.”

Limburgica and Caumerdal Cheese

The first inspiration came during a walk along the Caumerbeek, accompanied by alderman Clemens. The many herbs growing along the brook, such as wild garlic, form the basis of this delicious cheese — a herb known and used by the Romans as well. And the brook? It supplied water to Heerlen’s Roman bathhouse.

With Limburgica cheese they went a step further. An old recipe for Caseus, Roman cheese, inspired them. A wonderful combination of pepper, lovage and Amalfi lemons tingles your taste buds when you bite into Limburgica. And the label on the large cheese wheel hides numerous references to Roman South Limburg: the Voerendaal villa, the Lady of Simpelveld, and the waterways that carried water to and from the Roman bathhouse of Heerlen.

For Ronald and Eric it is important that the cheeses are produced honestly and locally. A Limburg farmer in Nederweert produces both cheeses. His cows roam freely, and even better: he does not vaccinate his cattle but simply uses turmeric. The result is a biodynamic, organic cheese.

The Secures Board

Delicious Store, woodworker FoodWood and Restaurant Graffiti joined forces to create a beautiful walnut board. The secures board is inspired by Heerlen’s Roman past. For its shape, woodworker John Lambrichs chose a Roman axe. The boards are handcrafted and the walnut wood comes from the Imstenraderbos in Heerlen.

It is a pure product — handmade and a true piece of craftsmanship. No board is the same. This makes it an exclusive, limited edition. The secures board is ideal for serving bread, cheese, olives and other delicacies.

Menapii

In Roman times, the Menapii lived in our region — an inventive people who already knew how to cure meat so it would keep longer. The Romans took an interest and were inspired. The basis of Italian cured meats therefore likely originated here.

Dierendonck Butcheries in Belgium managed to trace the original bloodline of the Menapian pig and revived the breed. Its meat is comparable to Pata Negra — in other words, “the very best of the best”.

At Delicious Store, you can enjoy a pâté made from Menapian pork: the so-called Fëte du Couchon. Ask for it at the counter and treat yourself to a delicious sourdough sandwich topped with this pâté and finished with delightful oignons Monegask.

Lucius’ Love Jar

For this product, Ronald drew inspiration from the oldest love story in the Netherlands. The Roman jar of Lucius the potter served as the starting point. They chose a tongue-teasing praline (dark, white or milk chocolate) filled with a smooth hazelnut praline.
Just like in love, you bite through the slightly firmer chocolate shell before enjoying the pure essence of nature inside: a deeply roasted hazelnut praline paste. It has a rich, deep nutty flavour, neither too bitter nor too sweet, referring to a passionate love full of surprises.

The shape of the praline — a small jar — refers to the oldest love story in the Netherlands. After all, the Roman Lucius personally made this jar for his beloved Amaka.
