The beautiful South Limburg landscape was an attractive, fertile place for the Romans. Many farmers were tempted to develop a large agricultural estate, the so-called Roman villas. There must have been hundreds of them in this region. Large quantities of grain fed many mouths in the area, but also at the Limes, the northern Roman frontier. With the proceeds, the owners embellished their farmhouses into complete country estates in Mediterranean style, with a bathhouse and Roman inventions such as glass windows and underfloor heating. They often had themselves buried with their valuables on their own land. Over the past hundred years, more than twenty of these estates have been archaeologically investigated and excavated. The finds became scattered across various collections.
The exhibition Roman Villas in Limburg brings together the most remarkable archaeological finds. Special attention is given to the inhabitants, from the lady of the house to the people who worked the land. The exhibition is a collaboration between the National Museum of Antiquities (Leiden), the Limburgs Museum (Venlo) and the Roman Museum (Heerlen).
This exhibition will be on display from 21 June 2025 until 4 January 2026 at De Vondst in Heerlen.
