Reading and writing are an inseparable part of our lives today but that was not always the case. Only when the Romans extended their rule into the Rhine-Meuse region did a written culture establish itself in our area.<\/p>\n
Since then, we know for example the names of individual soldiers who immortalized their names on their equipment. Stone funerary monuments and altar stones give us an insight into the religious worldview of the people, while maker\u2019s marks on pottery and transport amphorae tell us about economy and trade. How deeply reading and writing penetrated everyday life is also revealed in personal objects: blessings were engraved on jewelry, or declarations of love were made eternal.<\/p>\n
The exhibition explores, in various thematic areas, the significance and development of reading and writing skills in the Euregion, while at the same time shedding light on the research being carried out and the challenges that come with it.<\/p>\n
Lenders from Aachen, Bonn, Heerlen, J\u00fclich, Maastricht, and Tongeren have contributed around 130 objects to this exhibition.<\/p>\n
